03-10-2026 Spring is here
Hi Falcon Fans. Rebecca and Kewpee have been in and out of the nest box a lot. One will often be perched on the edge of the box looking out over the territory. Occasionally they will be in the box together and show typical pair bonding with soft (or loud) vocalizing, mutual bowing and sometimes touching beaks with each other.
Last week, I tackled some spring cleaning around the nest box and window well, clearing away debris ahead of breeding season. Judging by the amount of leftovers, it seems they threw a few parties over winter! While cleaning the camera, I accidentally dropped my cloth right in front of the box—oops! I couldn’t reach it, but it definitely caught Rebecca’s eye when I stretched through the box. She flew in at top speed, though she didn’t offer much help. I asked her for the cloth, but she left in a huff. Eventually, I managed to retrieve it with the garden trowel I use for cleaning up the window well. It’s certainly one of the more glamorous parts of the job. There are several video clips showing the cleaning process and the falcons in the nest box. When do you think we’ll spot the first egg this year? The earliest egg laying date was March 16 back in 2018.
