06-10-2026 Male newcomer identified

The Peregrine falcon newcomers appear to be staying in the area. We often see them on the 5th/3rd building, but we are not sure where else they spend their time. So far, we have not identified any favorite perches. We finally got a clear photo of the male’s band (Thank you Kathy K). The male hatched in Lansing on the Board of Walter and Light in 2022 and is named Racer!  Based on size, the unbanded falcon appears to be female, since females are larger than males. Without a band, however, we will never know where or when she hatched. We hope to see Peregrine falcons continue to nest in downtown Kalamazoo. We have not seen any courtship or mating behavior, but this is not the right time of year for it. We will have to wait until early spring for any signs of romance.

We do not have any sightings or reports about Rebecca or Kewpee. We hope they are fine – maybe they found a cute retirement condo up north somewhere.  Please keep us informed if you see or hear about any Peregrine falcons in the area.
