It's a Season of Romance for Peregrine Falcons

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Braving the heights to install a nesting box outside the 13th floor of the Fifth Third Bank building in downtown Kalamazoo seems to have done the trick. For the third year in a row, a pair of peregrine falcons has signaled its intentions to use the box to raise a family.

"The falcons are active - in and out
of the box a lot," Kalamazoo Audubon Soicety member Gail Walter said. She said she has noted some courting activity -the female stealing food from
the male.

Early March 2016 Romance is in the Air

3/7/2016

Our resident Peregrine falcons, Rebecca and Kewpee, stayed in downtown Kalamazoo all winter and have visited the nest box regularly.  Although peregrines are great migrators, there is plenty of food in the downtown area and the urban birds often stay in their home territory for the winter.   Kewpee especially spends time perched on the edge of the box surveying the town.  Now, in early March, they visit the box frequently during the day and are both occasionally (although  briefly), in the box together typically first thing in the morning.  They are showing signs of courtship and Kewpee has given up his lunch to Rebecca (or at least not resisted her taking his food and absconding with it).

Young peregrine falcons are named

7/23/2015

The young Kalamazoo peregrines received their community names today.  The birds will still be identified by their official federal and state band numbers, but the Fifth Third Bank hosted a contest to give community names to three of the four 2015 hatchlings.  A panel of judges, including Kalamazoo mayor Bobby Hopewell, sorted through the forty names submitted from the community.  The fourth bird was previously named by a local classroom.

Am I a Boy or a Girl?

7/7/2015

In my blog posts, I often use pronouns of he, she, or s/he when referring to a bird.  In reality, I often don’t know for sure.  The gender of a falcon is recorded at the time of banding, based on size alone.
