One of Kalamazoo’s  first successfully hatched peregrine falcons, Promise, was mentioned in the July 18, 2016 issue of TIME magazine, which detailed his relation to the Kalamazoo Promise. The article, covering “240 Reasons to Celebrate America Right Now,” listed Kalamazoo at number 145 as, “the city where high school grads go to college for free.”

As most locals know, the Kalamazoo Promise has been a major boon to our community, allowing all of our graduating children to attend college. It has, in many ways, become a defining aspect of our community. In light of the impact that the program has had, one of our 2014 falcons, Promise, was named in honor of it. Chosen by a special committee from a list of sixty suggestions offered by locals, Promise was rehabilitated – after a dramatic, and failed, first flight attempt – by Dave Hogan in Monroe, Michigan.

After returning from rehabilitation and learning the ropes from his parents in Kalamazoo, Promise has since moved to Detroit, where he now is a Dad and has his own family of four chicks! This year, a new cast of four young falcons has fledged atop the Fifth Third Bank building in downtown Kalamazoo.  If you would like to keep tabs on the Kalamazoo Falcons, we encourage you to visit our online falcon cam!
