Peregrine falcon cam

The plan was a predawn raid, aided by the cover of darkness, to rescue the Peregrine falcon chick that had fallen into the parapet

The Peregrine chick that tumbled into the parapet and spent the night under the nest box was successfully rescued early this morning

Now that the Peregrine chicks are banded, they need names!  The Fifth/Third Bank is once again hosting a contest to name the birds.

The four chicks have been growing fast and are starting to get their feathers making them look like punk-rock teenagers.  They were banded on May 20

With four hungry chicks to feed, the adult falocns are keeping busy hunting and feeding.

The first two eggs hatched on April 26, 2016, right on schedule, 30 days from the date of the last egg laid.

On Tuesday, April 19, join the Audubon Society of Kalamazoo from 12 – 1 PM on the top deck of Kalamazoo Parking Ramp #3 (Alamo Theater Ramp) to view the Peregrine falcons.

KALAMAZOO, MI -- Braving the heights to install a nesting box outside the 13th floor of the Fifth Third Bank building in downtown Kalamazoo seems to have done the trick. For the third year in a row, a pair of peregrine falcons has signaled its intentions to use the box to raise a family.

"The falcons are active - in and out
of the box a lot," Kalamazoo Audubon Soicety member Gail Walter said. She said she has noted some courting activity -the female stealing food from
the male.

Our resident Peregrine falcons, Rebecca and Kewpee, stayed in downtown Kalamazoo all winter and have visited the nest box regularly.  Although peregrines are great migrators, there is plenty of food in the downtown area and the urban birds often stay in their home territory for the winter.   Kewpee especially spends time perched on the edge of the box surveying the town.  Now, in early March, they visit the box frequently during the day and are both occasionally (although  briefly), in the box together typically first thing in the morning.  They are showing signs of courtship and Kewpee has given up his lunch to Rebecca (or at least not resisted her taking his food and absconding with it).
